a night in st. john, virgin islands

I’m pretty sure I was meant for island life. The warmth, the friendly locals, the ocean. How do I not live here yet? Connor and I headed to to St. John, USVI, on our first evening in the Caribbean and had the best time taking in the gorgeous views and sunset, sipping on red wine and tasting the local cuisine. If you have one afternoon or one night here, like we did, check out what to do and how to make the most of it below.

How to get there: FERRY BOAT. At least, that’s what we did. And it was so much fun. Be sure to get there early because it can get crowded if your there during the busy season. You can fly into St. John as well, but we simply boated over from St. Thomas since that’s where we were staying. The ferries run approximately every 30 minutes from St. Thomas to St. John, docking in Cruz Bay and every 45 minutes from St. John back to St. Thomas, docking in Red Hook. It’s only like 10 dollars or something. The rides end around midnight (check it though when you go!) so make sure you give yourself enough time to get back to whichever island you’re staying at! We seriously almost missed it and would have had to sleep on the beach…

The view of Cruz Bay in St. John from Caneel Hill. A MUST SEE view, right?!

Where to eat: (while I’m sure there were tons of fabulous restaurants, since we were only spending one night in St. John we had to choose!)

Asolare | Asian-fusion eclectic mix of goodness and fresh local finds. We started with the Watermelon & Feta Salad topped with togarashi pumpkin seeds and baby radish. It was super fresh and yet still refined, and reminded me of summer. Next up – seasame-encrusted pan seared tuna. Is your mouth watering yet? I usually stick to the raw sushi versions of tuna, but HAD to make an exception and try this. It came with house sausage and pineapple fried rice, wasabi cucumber shrimp slaw, and cilantro aioli. Omg.

Read more about the history of Asolare here. It’s actually super cool and interesting.

Bar scene: St. John is perfect for your casual, beachy island bar. Yes, please. If you want more of a nightlife vibe, St. Thomas or St. Croix should be your go-to island.

The Beach Bar | Right off the dock and right on the beach, kick off your sandals and kick back with your favorite cold beer. Super chill. Awesome music. Apparently they have a pretty good day party too.
